C ruksisme adalah kebiasaan mengeretakkan gigi secara non-fungsional yang dapat dilakukan dalam keadaan sadar atau tidak sadar ketika anak tidak mengunyah atau menelan. Faktor penyebab bruksisme adalah faktor lokal. Sistemik, psikologis dan herediter.
B ruxism is a habit of grinding or gnashing of teeth (a non-functional habit) which could happen either by conscious or subconscious when children are not chewing or swallowing. The etiologic factors are local, systemic, psychological and hereditary. Autism is a developmental disorder characterized by severe deficits in social interaction and communication. A wide spectrum of medical and behavioral symptoms is exhibited by children with autism, which makes routine dental care very difficult in them. Bruxism is one of the problems commonly observed in children with autism. The prevalence of bruxism in autistic children are higher than normal children. For autistic children, a comprehensive educational concept like regular tell-show- do method is a way to communicate, to increase their ability to cooperate with the dentist and in the long run secure better oral health and higher quality of life. The combination of occlusal splint, physical and vocal cue as effective treatment for bruxism in autistic children, it is expected that tooth wear and other symptoms that could cause adverse effects to the patient could be prevented as early as possible.
