B Background: Tooth discoloration in the community has led to the increased of self-distrust. Tooth discoloration is caused by extrinsic factors and intrinsic factors. Extrinsic factors include food and drinks such as coffee and tea, drugs, and mouthwash. In this case the community believes that using activated charcoal powder for brushing teeth can whiten and brighten the color of the teeth. However, the public does not know the impact that can happen such as the decrease in enamel hardness. Objective: To determine the effect of tooth brushing duration using activated charcoal powder against enamel hardness. Method: The sample used were the buccal surface of the upper and lower premolars. After mounting and polishing, the initial hardness of the email was measured. Then, brushing using activated charcoal powder and distillation water is carried out for 4 minutes 40 seconds and 14 minutes. Enamel hardness was measured using a micro Vickers hardness test. Results: There was significant difference between brushing using activated charcoal powder with distilled water (p = 0.000). There was no significant difference between brushing using activated charcoal powder for 4 minutes 40 seconds and 14 minutes (p = 0.759). Conclusion: The use of activated charcoal powder in the tooth brushing process can reduce the enamel hardness.
