B ackground: A lot of studies has discovered that activated charcoal has theability to absorb toxins, inhibit growths of microorganisms, and whitens teeth, butthere has never been any research on the effect of activated charcoal on Candidaalbicans growth. Objective: To discover the effect of activated charcoal onCandida albicans growth in vitro. Methods: A laboratory experimental researchusing dilution method with Norit® and Mello White activated charcoal® onATCC 10231 Candida albicans with various concentration consisting of 100%,50%, 25%, 12,5%, 6,25%, 3,125%, and 1,56%. Results: Growth of Candidaalbicans was present in this research. The most growth happened on the 100%concentration as much as 245 CFU/ml of Candida albicans on Norit® dish and323 CFU/ml of Candida albicans on Mello White activated charcoal® dish, whilst the least amount of growth observed on the concentration of 3,125%Norit® and 12,5% Mello White activated charcoal®, as much as 101 CFU/ml and152,5 CFU/ml, respectively. There were also growths of Candida albicans on thepositive control (Nistatin) as much as 76,5 CFU/ml and 70 CFU/ml and as muchas 81 CFU/ml and 175 CFU/ml on the negative control (sterile aquades). Conclusion: The results shown suggested that there were no inhibitory effect ofactivated charcoal upon Candida albicans growth.
