Teh awur memiliki daya anti bakteri terhadap streptococcus mutans
D irektur Gigi dan Mulut, Departemen Kesehatan Republik Indonesia menyatakan bahwa 90 % dari penduduk Indonesia mengalami karies gigi (Ahmad Djojosugito, 2000). Etiologi dari karies gigi adalah multifaktor, termasuk keadaan nutrisi, diet (konsumsi gula), mikrofloral mulut, gigi, dan waktu. Streptococcus mutans sangat berperan penting dalam etiologi karies gigi pada manusia. Teh “Awur†yang tergolong kedalam teh hitam merupakan salah satu minuman yang paling banyak dikonsumsi di Indonesia. Teh ini sangat popular dengan berbagai macam rasa, dikombinasi dengan efeknya tersendiri. Telah dinyatakan bahwa bagi mereka yang rutin minum teh “awur†dalam jumlah yang cukup besar akan mengurangi kerusakan gigi. Teh “Awur†sangat efektif sebagai antibakteria dan antikariogenik, dan juga memiliki kemampuan untuk menghambat sintesis enzim enolase, sehingga glukosa tidak dapat diubah menjadi asam. Teh “Awur†ini mengandung fluorida yang berpotensi dalam menghambat pertumbuhan Streptococcus mutans. Bakteri ini merupakan pencetus timbulnya plak gigi karena dapat bertindak sebagai fasilitator kuman lainnya. Temyata daya antibakteria dari teh “Awur†mampu dengan efektif dalam mencegah pertumbuhan Streptococcus mutans.

The etiology of dental caries are multifactorial, including nutritional status, diet (sugar intake), the cariogenic microflora, teeth, and time. Streptococcus mutans plays an important role as the etiology of dental caries in human. “Awur†tea which is belongs to black tea is one of the most widely consumed beverages in Indonesia. Its popularity is attributed to its pleasant flavor combined with its stimulating effects. It has been said that those who continuosly drink a large amount of “awur†tea have less tooth decay. “Awur†tea is effective as an antibacterial and anticariogenic agent, and it also has the ability to inhibit enolase enzyme synthesis, so that glucose cannot be changed into acid. “Awur†tea contains a fluoride which has potency to inhibit the colony of Streptococcus mutans. This bacteria is the pioneer of the occurrence of dental plaque because it acts as a facilitator for other bacteria. The antibacterial ability of “awur†tea is very effective to prevent the growth of Streptococcus mutans.
