T The prevalence of type 2 diabetes in Indonesia has increased from year to year. Positive effects had been shown in coffee drinkers on blood glucose levels. The aim of this study is to determine the correlation between coffee consumption and fasting blood glucose levels. This is a cross-sectional study involving 136 non-obese subjects, aged 40-65 years, non-smoking, not consuming alcohol, not being pregnant or lactation. The coffee consumption was known by interviews and fasting blood sugar levels were measured with peripheral blood after fasting 8-10 hours. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20 for windows software with spearman test and significance limit of 0.05. Most of the respondents were women aged 46-55 years. There were 40.4% subjects consumed coffee every day and mostly they drink one glass coffee per day. The median fasting blood glucose levels was 90 mg/dL. We found a strong negative correlation (r = - 0.647) between coffee consumption and fasting blood sugar levels (p <0.001). Coffee consumption could be used as one of dietary factor to maintaining fasting blood glucose, or further might use to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.
