T The COVID-19 virus infects humans through the respiratory tract and can cause death. Many factors cause the high mortality rate from COVID-19. Cytokine storm is one of the conditions where there is an over response of the body's immune system through the release of IL-6 cytokines which greatly affects the clinical condition of COVID-19 patients and can cause mortality in COVID-19 patients. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between IL-6 levels and the incidence of mortality in COVID-19 patients.METHODThis study used an analytic observational method with a cross sectional approach. This research was conducted by Consecutive Sampling. Data collection was carried out from the medical records of COVID-19 patients. The relationship between variables was analyzed using the Chi Square test in the SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) program using univariate and bivariate analysis.RESULTSThe results of the study obtained from 336, there were 61.6% of male patients, 46.4% of patients aged ≥60 years, 37.8% of patients had interleukin levels between 7.01- 80 pg/ml, and patients were dominated by who died as much as 60.4%. Chi-square results found a significant relationship between interleukin 6 levels (p=0.000) and mortality in COVID-19 patients, and a significant relationship between age and mortality in COVID-19 patients, and there was also a significant relationship between gender and mortality in COVID-19 patients. (p = 0.000).CONCLUSIONIn this study, the results showed that there was a relationship between interleukin 6 levels and the incidence of mortality in COVID-19 patients. A relationship was also found between age, sex and mortality in COVID-19 patients.
