L Latar Belakang.

B Background Antiseptic mouthrinse contains essential oils such as methylsalicylate, eucalyptol, thyrnol and menthol that have antiplaque and antigingivitis properties, hence is good as an adjunct to mechanical oral hygiene procedure. Objective The study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of antiseptic mouthrinse on dental plaque inhibition and salivary flow rate escalation. Methods Thirty eligible subjects, aged 18-25 years, were randomized into two selected groups: (1) antiseptic mouthrinse (AS); (2) saline solution (SAL). As baseline score, subjects received a thorough dental prophylaxis procedure. Salivary flow rate was measured twice by Sialometry, before and immediately after 30s of first rinsing. Twenty rnL of selected mouthrinse was used twice daily for 30s after tooth brushing for 2 minutes. Subjects were assessed for plaque accumulation by the Silness & Loe (1964) Plaque Index (Pll) at 4, 24, and 72h. Mean Pll score was analyzed using two way ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) and Post Hoc (Bonferroni) analysis. Results The mean of Pll for AS and SAL were 0.44(SD=0.12) and 0.81(SD=0.05). There was no statistically significant difference (p>0.05) in Pll between 4, 24 and 72 hours group. Salivary flow rate in AS and SAL escalated 5x and 2x respectively. Conclusion This controlled clinical study demonstrated that antiseptic mouthrinse is effective in plaque inhibition and salivary flow rate escalation.
