D Donan River which located in Cilacap, Central Java Province, is an aquatic ecosystem that is influenced by tidal currents. However, in the presence of several industries in the surroundings were considered to give some potential impacts to its environment. The waste is a liquid waste which comes from the crude oil refining process. This waste was considered remains oil in a certain concentration that may lead to pollute the waters environment. This study was aimed to determine the concentration of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) in water and in sediments. Also, the change of the concentration in each sampling location, the influence of other water environmental parameters and the distribution of oil due to their fate to the characterized parameters were emphasized. The the concentration of TPH in water was determined by spectrophotometric analysis method Concawe Infra Red 1/72, and a gravimetry method was applied to sediment. for sediment, as well as the influence of the presence of TPH on water quality both physically and chemically. Retrieved in May 2010 when water level is high, the highest TPH at Point 3 (after PT. Holcim) that is equal to 0.52 mg/l, and the lowest TPH in Point 4 (outlet Pertamina) that is equal to 0.024 mg/l. In June 2010 when low water level, the highest TPH was in Point 3, ie 0.29 mg/l and TPH in water at the lowest point 4 is equal to 0.1 mg l. For the sediment in May 2010 when water level is high, the highest TPH is at Point 7 (Pertamina unloading port area) that is equal to 11 520 mg/kg and the lowest is at Point 3 in the amount of 347 mg/kg. And in June 2010 when low water level, the highest TPH in sediment located in Point 3 that at 5100 mg/kg, and TPH in sediment were lowest in Point 6 (before the port area) that is equal to 1500 mg/kg. By neglecting some factors that contributed to the oil spreading pattern on the water surface, the load of TPH in Pertamina waste water that discharged into the river, this will covered up all over the water surface of the Donan River with a layer about 6,9012.10- iii 5 µm thickness.. This approach was also applied to predict the occurence of the TPH in the sediment. By implementing the Stokes Law and using some values of the density and particle size of materials that more likely to the TPH as an analogical approach, it was calculated that the sinking velocity of the TPH was 0,0054 m/second. Assuming the the wates was a calm and stagnant waters, it means that for an average depth of Donan River (5 meter depth), the TPH particle on the water surface will reached to the bottom sediment within 257 hours period. Some conclusions can be derived a.o. that the concentration of TPH in the waters still meet the Government Regulation No. 82 of 2001 on Water Quality Management and Control of Water Pollution on Class II water quality criteria. However, instead of focusing to the TPH concentration in the water column, the concern should be given more to its concentration in the bottom sediment as it tend to be accumulated from of what occurred in the water column. No matter how small the concentration of the TPH contained in the waters, still this will be able to change its quality in relation to its properties in the environment.
