B Background : In recent years, vaping has gained significant popularity in Indonesia, particularly among adolescents. This trend is attributed to the perceived advantages of vaping, notably the belief that it is a safer alternative to traditional cigarette smoking. However, numerous studies have demonstrated that vape aerosols contain a plethora of harmful constituents that can give rise to various health side effect, including potential alteration of the salivary profile and subsequent implications for oral health. Aim : The primary objective of this study is to compare the salivary profiles of vape smokers and non-smokers at Trisakti University, focusing on parameters such as acidity level, flow rate, viscosity, as well as the prevalence of Streptococcus mutans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Candida albicans. Methods : This research employed an analytical observational approach with a cross-sectional design, involving the collection of saliva samples through the draining method from both vape-smoking and non-smoking students. Saliva viscosity was assessed through visual examination, while saliva flow rate was monitored over a ten-minute period. Quantification of bacterial presence was performed using qPCR, and salivary acidity was determined using a digital pH meter. Various statistical tests were utilized for data analysis. Results : The findings revealed significant difference in pH (p=0.002), viscosity (p=0.016), flow rate (p<0.001), as well as the quantity of P. gingivalis (p<0.001) and C. albicans (p=0.001) between the vape-smoking and non-smoking groups. Conversely, the prevalence of S. mutans did not exhibit a significant difference between the two groups (p=0.646). Conclusion : The study demonstrated marked differences in salivary acidity, flow rate, viscosity, as well as the prevalence of P. gingivalis and C. albicans between vape smokers and non-smokers.
