F Fixed orthodontic appliances may have positive or negative influence to the periodontium tissue. Fixed orthodontic appliances may be used to prevent periodontal disease and improve periodontium health by improving the malposition in order to adequately clean and maintain their dentitions. Fixed orthodontic treatment is also an alternative approach in treatment of periodontal disease however the success of the treatment of the periodontal involved teeth depends on the among the periodontist, orthodontist and the patient. Beside the positive influences, the use of fixed orthodontic appliances such as braket, band and arch wire may cause plaque retention and difficult to clean and can irritate the periodontium tissue. The strength pressure during fixed orthodontic treatment that over the periodontal tissue adaptation, may cause periodontal destruction such as gingival recession, hiperplasia gingiva, lost of investing structures of the tooth and sometimes root resorption.
