Abstract

S Seiring dengan perkembangan jaman, stres menjadi suatu permasalahan yang tidak dapat dipisahkan dari kehidupan manusia. Bruxism merupakan suatu kebiasaan mengertakkan gigi yang tidak diketahui secara pasti penyebabnya, namun diduga stres berperan besar didalamnya.Walaupun ada juga bruxism yang disebabkan karena obat-obatan tertentu, restorasi gigi yang tidak baik,maupun faktor genetik. Bruxism dapat diderita oleh siapa saja, tidak tergantung usia, jenis kelamin, dan ras. Bruxism dapat teijadi siang atau malam hari dan sebagian besar penderita tidak sadar dan tidak mencermati gejala-gejala yang ada, seperti rasa lelah pada wajah saat bangun tidur,hingga sakit kepala, sampai lama-kelamaan keadaan tersebut menjadi kronis-Akibat bruxism sangat merugikan, seperti meningkatnya mobilitas gigi, atrisi gigi, hipertrofi otot wajah yang sangat berpengaruh terhadap estetik. Terapi bruxism merupakan terapi yang bersifat palliative. Banyak cara untuk merawat pasien bruxism. Salah satunya dengan Michiganâ€™s Splinting yang dianggap dapat menghilangkan kebiasaan bruxism. Michigan splinting merupakan alat yang dipakai pada rahang atas dan menutupi seluruh permukaan oklusal dan insisal gigi sehingga tidak berkontak dengan gigi antagonisnya. Prinsip kerja Michiganâ€™s Splinting adalah dengan memutus suatu siklus gerakan bruxism yang teijalin dibawah sadar antara sistem saraf pusat, temporomandibular joint, dan jaringan periodontal, yang disebut vicious circle. Dengan diputusnya siklus tersebut, maka oklusi menjadi normal dan kebiasaan bruxism dapat dihentikan. Perawatan bruxism dengan Michiganâ€™s splinting sampai saat ini dianggap cukup efektif dan ekonomis dibandingkan jenis splinting lainnya.

Bruxism is a habit to grind the teeth that no one has exactly known the cause of it, but stress is suspected to give a great influence for it. Although certain drugs, imperfect restoration or genetic factor can also result in bruxism. Anyone can have this bruxism regardless of the age, sex, or race factors. Bruxism can also happen during the day or night, and most people do not realize that they are having bruxism and do not aware the symptoms such as facial fatique when they awake from sleep until to feel headache, and gradually it will turn to be a chronic condition. The result of bruxism is very destructive such as the increase of tooth mobility, tooth attrition and facial muscle hypertrophy that has a big impact to the aesthetics. Bruxism therapy is a palliative treatment and there are many treatment alternatives. One of the treatment alternative is by using the Michiganâ€™s Splinting to stop the bruxism habit. Michiganâ€™s Splinting is a dental device that always seated on maxillary teeth to cover all occlusal and insisal surface of the teeth, hence it will protect the upper teeth to be in contact with their antagonist. The principle of Michiganâ€™s Splinting is to cut off the bruxism movement cycle named vicious circle that is created unconsciously between the central nerves system, temporomandibular joint and the periodontium. With the interference to the bruxism cycle, the occlusion is expected to be normal again and the bruxism habit can be stopped. The bruxism treatment with Michiganâ€™s Splinting is up untill now has been known to be an effective and economic treatment compared to other alternatives.
